Using AoL Instant Messenger for FTP

What is it?

Some instant message clients such as AoL's Instant Messenger have built in file transfer programs. You do not have to have an AoL account to download and use AIM. For more details check out www.aol.com.

How do I send files using Instant Messenger?

  1. First, open up and log onto Aol Instant Messenger like you would to send messages.
  2. Find the name of the person you want to send the file to, they must be also connected to Instant Messenger. Double click on their name to send them a message.
  3. While you have the message window open, click on 'file' and choose 'send file'

  4. A window will open asking you what you want to send, choose 'file' or 'directory'. Directory is for sending an entire folder, file is for a particular document. Once you've selected the file you want to send, you can enter a message for your friend explaining what it is you are sending, and then click 'send'.

  5. You will get a waiting to send message, and then if your buddy accepts the message you will get a confirmation message like the one below.

There is no size limit on the file you send, however if you have a slow network connection or loose connection to AIM during the transfer, you may have to start over again.
