FTP in Internet Explorer
What is it?
The Internet Explorer Web Browser can also be used as a File Transfer Program with no set up necessary! Easy to use, it is quite popular though it does have the disturbing habit of remembering passwords making it less secure than other FTP programs.
How do I send files using Internet Explorer?
- First, you need an FTP site to connect to. You need to know the name of the computer you are sending the file to and the username and password set on it if any. Contact the computer's administrator to find this out... if the administrator is you, go back to our FTP page and look at the section about setting up your computer to be an FTP site.
- Open up Internet Explorer. Click on the address bar and delete whatever webpage you're on and instead type in Ftp:// followed by the hostname of the computer you want. For an example, I happen to know a friend's computer (fuzzybunny) is also an FTP site.
- If the computer or FTP site has a password, a window will pop up asking for your username and password. This is the username and password for that particular computer, not your regular Case Username or Password! Note, we recommend strongly setting a username and password if you have an FTP site, otherwise anyone on the internet can send and receive files (including viruses!) to the site.
- After a successful connection you will see a window just like a folder on your computer! You can simply click and drag documents into or out of the window like you would move them to and from a folder on your own computer. Copy and Paste work as well.
