File Transfer Programs

What is FTP?

File Transfer Protocol is a way of sending files through a network or the internet. Unlike email attachments, there is no limit to the size of a file that FTP can transfer. FTP sites can be set with passwords as well to add a layer of security. The University does have a public FTP site that does not require a password ftp://ftp.case.edu. You cannot put any files onto this public ftp site, but you can copy from it.

Sending and receiving files

You need to have an FTP Program installed on your computer and on the computer you wish to transfer the file to. Both computers must be turned on and on line. The specifics of how you transfer the files depends upon the program you are using.

Making your computer an FTP server

Windows NT, 2000 and XP have an FTP Program built in, as does AOL Instant Messenger and several other Instant Messenger type programs. To use the Instant Messenger programs, all you need is to have that brand of Instant Messenger installed on both computers.
