Reading Newsgroups in Netscape

What is it?

If you have the current Netscape Navigator you will not have a built-in newsreader. Instead, you can download Netscape Communicator directly from the Netscape website (http://home.netscape.com, click on Downloads) which comes with a built-in newsreader.

Setting up Netscape's News Reader

Go to Edit and select Preferences and then Mail & Newsgroups. In the Newsgroups Server (Windows) or News Servers (Macintosh) section, click Add and fill in news.case.edu (examples below).

Using Netscape's News Reader

Open the Communicator menu and select Newsgroups, or click on either the Newsgroups button in the floating toolbar or the Newsgroups icon in the bottom right toolbar. If you click on a link to a specific newsgroup, Collabra will automatically open.

When the newsreader opens, the only thing visible will be the Message Center, a single-paned window showing the Discussion Groups to which you have subscribed, and the local mail account. Select the Discussion group you want to read. The messages will open in another window.

Collabra has three distinct sections:
  1. The Group List on the left
  2. Message Headings: This covers the upper half of the Discussion window and shows the list of messages from the newsgroup. The headings include: Subject - Subject line of the message Read icon - a bullet indicating whether a message is read or unread Sender or To/From - Person who sent the message Date - Date and time the message was posted Priority - Priority of the message within the group
  3. Message Content Pane: This section covers the bottom half of the window and shows the text of a single message.
