Outlook's News Reader

What is it?

The Outlook Express email program comes installed on most Windows Computers, and the full version of Outlook is a part of Microsoft Office. If you don't have Outlook installed and want to use it, you can get it from Microsoft's Website. Because it is so frequently already installed on computers it is one of the most popular news readers as well as email programs. (Note: be careful, Outlook and Outlook Express have virus vulnerabilities.)

Setting up Outlook's News Reader

  • For Macintosh, from the Edit menu select Preferences. Under Accounts, select the E- mail category.
  • For Windows 95/98, go to the Tools menu and select Accounts. Click Add and select Mail. The Wizard will ask for the information it needs.
It may ask you for your email account information (This news reader is also an email program, though not one we recommend.) If you choose to enter your email information it should be as follows: Sending Mail/Outgoing Mail, the SMTP server is smtp.case.edu; and under Receiving Mail/Incoming Mail, the POP server is pop.case.edu. Your POP account name is simply your user-ID, (the first part of your CASE email address, usually your initials followed by a number such as abc7). Fill in your name as you like and full email address (abc7@case.edu) when prompted. We do not recommend filling in a password at this time. If you are asked about your connection type, select "Connect using my local area network (LAN)".

To fill in the News server information, on a Mac go to the Account Information section; In Windows, click again on the Add button and select News. You will need to fill in your e-mail address and name as well as the News Server (NNTP) which is news.case.edu. For convenience you are asked to give your server selection a friendly name. Try something like "Case Newsgroups" or another descriptive name as you like.
