Opera's News Reader

What is it?

The Opera web browser comes with a built in news reader program. You can use this news reader right away even if you only have the trial (free) version of Opera.

Setting up Opera's News Reader

  1. At the top of your screen, click on 'news' and select 'read'. A window will pop up saying there is no news server specified and if you would like to set up now. Click 'Yes'. (You can also get to this window by going to 'file' and choose 'preferences' and then click on 'news'.

  2. Where it says 'default news server' type news.case.edu The other settings are optional, it's fine to leave them as they are. Click OK.

  3. You are now ready to read the news!

Reading the News

  1. At the top of your screen, click on 'news' and select 'read'. You may get a screen telling you to select all, update or search for a particular topic.

  2. If you click 'all' you will get a list of all the newsgroups available. Several of them have sub groups, for example click on the folder labeled 'CWRU', it has several sub groups including 'cwru.net' for CWRU Network related news. Cwru.net has several subgroups itself. 'CWRU.net.General' and 'CWRU.net.announce' are two good groups to keep in mind if you want the latest network news. Note the column on the right which lists how many messages are in that newsgroup.

  3. Double click on the name of the group you want and a new window will open with a list of the messages in that group and the date they were posted. By default, Opera groups the messages. The little sub folders show people replying to the same original message.

  4. To read a message, double click on it. Hitting 'reply' at the top will let you type a response to a particular message, clicking 'compose' lets you post a brand new original message.
