Travelling

Away from Home

There is a lot of functionality and convenience to our network on campus, unfortunately not everyone can stay on campus. Here are a few tips and suggestions to make your time physically apart from the university easier.

Before you leave

  1. Are you bringing a computer with you?
    • Yes? Make back ups of important data before you go and take an inventory of what peripheral devices and software you have on your laptop including serial numbers. The risk of theft is especially dangerous to the traveler. For more information, Road News has an article on Traveling with your Laptop.
    • No? Look into Cyber Café's or if you are going to another university or institution, check to see if they will be providing you with a computer. Two Cyber Café search engines are http://www.cybercafe.com and http://cybercaptive.com.
  2. Do you have an Internet Service Provider where you are going?
    • Yes? Good. Set up VPN so you can connect to Case restricted resources, but remember that VPN is designed for use over high speed connections such as DSL or cable modem and WILL NOT work with AOL, MSN or any of the other big ISPs.
    • No? You'll need to find an ISP for yourself, (INT Media Group, Inc has A List of ISP's) then set up VPN. If you are in the Greater Cleveland Area, you can use Case's PPP Dial-up Service. Be aware that normal long distance rates apply.
  3. Will you be checking your Case Email account?

What to pack

  1. Your computer
    • power, phone and network cables
    • system disks (The Operating System and important programs in case you need to reinstall something)
    • extra batteries or power supply
  2. Your Password!
You will need your Case password to access your email, restricted websites and resources. It's fairly small and doesn't take up much room in the suitcase and worth bringing along and avoiding the hassle of trying to get your password reset when you're not on campus!
