Things to Avoid
There are a lot of different network products out there, some work wonderfully, others cause trouble. This is a quick list of programs and other things to avoid. Some of them are specifically blocked or banned by Technical Infrastructure Services.
Peer to Peer File Sharing Programs such as KaZaA, Limewire, Napster and eDonkey
Peer to Peer programs are usually designed for use on small home networks or not on a network at all, therefore almost all of these programs cause problems when put on our network. They can cause a lot of traffic and disrupt other networking programs.
Anonymous FTP
File Transfer Protocol is a great tool and one we recommend for sending large files over networks and the internet. However, if you set up an anonymous FTP Server you open yourself up to a lot of danger.
Unauthorized Wireless Access Points
User-installed access points are not allowed on the Case network.
DNS, DHCP, WINS and Proxy Servers
Basically setting up a private network and connecting it to our network is a bad idea. If you set up your own network that's fine... just keep it self-contained and don't connect it to a CASE faceplate. If you want to use a router, switch, bridge or other advanced piece of networking hardware, check with Technical Infrastructure Services first.
IP Address Spoofing or Specifying
CASE IP Addresses are routed dynamically, specifying an ip address therefore can cause a lot of problems. If you apply for a static IP Address you will always obtain the same address unless you are unable to connect. If you can't connect, having the address specified isn't going to help so there is no reason to do so.
