VPN for Linux and Solaris

Important notes:
  • The old VPN Client for Solaris must be uninstalled before installing a new VPN Client.
  • It is not required to uninstall an old VPN Client for Linux before installing a new VPN Client.
  • The VPN 5000 Client must be uninstalled before installing a new VPN Client. Refer to the Cisco VPN 5000 Client documentation for more information.
  • To install the VPN Client, the kernel source must be on the system that was used to build the kernel, and that is running on the system.
  • Instructions for the first-time VPN Client install for Linux are in the VPN Client User Guide (PDF format) . For instructions on removing, upgrading the VPN Client, or installing VPN Client for Solaris OS, please refer to this guide.
  1. Downloading the VPN Client and .pcf file
  2. Unpacking the VPN Client files
    • Locate the downloaded file.
    • Unpack the file using zcat and tar commands.
      zcat vpnclient-linux-x.x.xxx-K9.tar.gz | tar xvf -
      or more generically, zcat <vpnclient .gz filename> | tar xvf -
  3. Installing the software
    • Obtain SUPERUSER privilege
    • type cd vpnclient
    • type ./vpn_install
    • Press Enter to choose default response for all prompts.
    • Once completed, restart the computer.
  4. Copying .pcf file to the correct location
    • Locate the downloaded CaseVPN.pcf file
    • type cp CaseVPN.pcf /etc/CiscoVPNClient/Profiles
    • type chmod 666 /etc/CiscoVPNClient/Profiles/CaseVPN.pcf
  5. Test Connection
    • Exit to normal user mode
    • type vpnclient connect CaseVPN
    • Enter the username and password as prompted.
    • Once the connection is made, do not close the terminal window or the VPN session will be closed.
