Setting up a computer to connect to the Case wireless network.
  • An 802.11a, 802.11b, or 802.11g wireless ethernet card must be already installed on the computer. Dell laptops ordered through Case have the capability for all three radio frequencies.
  • Configuring the Wireless Network Card. Most wireless network cards will automatically detect and connect to our wireless network. However, if it does not automatically connect, you can specify the SSID. The type of wireless network card in the computer determines how the SSID must be specified.
  • The SSID for the Case wireless network is CaseGuest. Capitalization is important. Once the SSID is entered, some activity statistics for the wireless access point should pop up. Please make sure that Use data encryption is not checked. This setting is usually located in the wireless properties.
    • For Macintosh OS X:
      1. Click on the apple icon in the top left corner of your screen.
      2. Go to System Preferences.
      3. Double-click on Network.
      4. Under Show, select AirPort.
      5. Under the AirPort tab and after By default, join:, select Preferred Networks.
      6. If CaseGuest is not there already, click ++ and type it in. Choose Wireless Security: None.
      7. Under Options, select the following settings:
        1. Ask before joining an open network. You should beware of other networks, particularly peer-to-peer networks that you didn't create.
        2. Check both boxes for Require administrator password to:. Click Apply Now. You may close the window.
        3. If it isn't already, uncheck the box for Automatically add new networks to the preferred networks list.
      8. Click Apply Now. You may close the window.
    • For Windows XP:
      1. Usually, a wireless connection will show up as an icon that looks like two computers linked together, appearing the system tray next to the clock. If the icon is not there, go to Start, select Control Panel and then double-click Network Connections. Right-click on the connection icon.
      2. If the wireless card is not enabled, click Enable. Right-click the connection icon again and click Properties. Select the Wireless Networks tab and the available wireless networks will be listed in the Preferred Networks window.
      3. If CaseGuest is not in the window, click Add next to Preferred networks. Type CaseGuest for SSID, and make sure that Data encryption is at Disabled and NOT WEP. The wireless card is now configured properly for the Case wireless network. If any other networks appear, remove them to avoid connectivity problems, although if you have an Internet connection at home, it may be in the list.
      4. Click Advanced and make sure that only Access Point (infrastructure) networks only is checked and that the other two items are unchecked. Also, ensure that Automatically Connect to Non-Preferred Networks is unchecked. Click Close.

  • Registering the wireless card. All current faculty, staff, and students should register their wireless cards by calling the Help Desk (368-HELP) with the Ethernet (or MAC) Address, but it is not required as the wired network is. How to find the Ethernet Address. Guests are not required to register their wireless connection.
  • You're done! Please note that the CaseGuest network terminates outside of the Case Network and is unencrypted. If you are current Case Staff, Student or Faculty you should install the VPN Client or use SSL-enabled sites. You will experience higher data throughput on the wireless network if you use the VPN
