Backing up Eudora for Windows
How to save your Eudora email
What is it?
In a perfect world, you'd never have to back up your Eudora email, alas this is not a perfect world. These instructions will help you save and back up your Eudora email messages in case you have to reinstall Eudora, or simply want to move the messages to another copy of Eudora (such as one on a different computer). Unfortunately these instructions are only for the Microsoft Windows version of Eudora.
So how do I do this?
- First thing to do is to determine whether you will be saving your mailboxes and such to a floppy disk or a file on the hard drive.
Note: If you are saving to a floppy, remember that all of these files will probably fill more than one floppy, especially your attachments. If you are saving to your hard drive, you should create a new folder and name it something, such as Eudora backup. - If you are saving to your hard drive, go to my computer--->C drive. Click on file then new then folder. Name it Eudora Backup. Open this folder and minimize it.
- Locate your Eudora folder. It will either be on your C drive directly, or it may be under C/program files/qualcomm/eudora. Wherever it may be, open it and minimize it.
- Close all other folders and files with the exception of your Eudora backup and Eudora folder.
- Go through your Eudora folder and highlight all of your files that include: mbx, toc, nndbase, attach and sig. (You can highlight multiple items by holding the control key down).
- Click on your edit button and choose copy.
- Maximize your Eudora backup folder and click on edit and paste. This will paste all of your files from your Eudora folder, that you copied, into the backup.
- If you want to uninstall your current Eudora and reinstall a new one, close your Eudora folder and your backup folder. Go to my computer--->control panel--->add/remove programs. Highlight Eudora and click the add/remove button. This will uninstall Eudora.
Note: Remember to remove your shortcut on your desktop if you have one. - It is best to reboot at this point.
- Once rebooted, you can install your new Eudora as you would any program.
Note: You may have to download a copy of the Eudora installer if you no longer have it on disk. You can do that from Eudora's website. - After the install, you need to open the Eudora folder as well as you Eudora backup folder and copy all of your files in the backup folder and paste them into the Eudora folder. Say yes to any file that wants to replace the existing.
- When you open Eudora for the first time, you will have to reconfigure it for use, and those instructions are found on our Eudora page.
