Eudora for Windows
How to set up Eudora to check your Case Email
These instructions assume you have already installed Eudora, if you have not download Eudora and install it. You cannot use IMAP with Eudora 4.1 or earlier.
If you already have Eudora installed and have been checking mail using the old POP method, there are some important considerations before you change to IMAP. Make sure you have your email backed up to another file or disk as there is a high risk of losing all of your old mail.
- After installing the program, open your Eudora and cancel any auto-configure program that may start up. If this is a previously used copy of Eudora, you may want to make a new Personality (See Tools, Personalities) for your old mail or back up all the email using our backing up Eudora instructions before continuing with these instructions.
- With Eudora open, click on tools in the top selections, and choose options.
- On the left there is a list of categories, select 'Getting Started'. (This is usually what is selected by default.) Enter the following settings:
- Put whatever you like for your Real Name
- Your Case email address is the return address
- mail.cwru.edu as your incoming mail server
- Your Case Username is the login name. Your Username can be the first part of your email address, everything before the @ sign. It is also usually your initials followed by a number, for example John Q. Public's username might be jqp99.
- Your Outgoing mail server is smtp.cwru.edu. If you are Off Campus and not connecting directly to Case using ppp or VPN, you will need to enter the smtp server of your internet service provider (ISP) instead.
- Now select 'Checking Mail' from the left and set it so that the program checks for mail no less than every 10 minutes. If you leave it to 0 minutes Eudora will not check mail automatically and will wait for you to click the 'check mail' button. Checking mail more often than every 10 minutes is against Network Policy and bad for the mail servers. Also make sure 'Secure Sockets when Receiving' is set to 'If Available, STARTTLS'.
- Select 'Incoming Mail' from the left scroll bar. Where it says 'Server Configuration' at the top Select if you would like to use IMAP or POP. A complete explaination of the difference between IMAP and POP is on our main checking mail page. Note: IMAP will not work for Eudora 4.1 and earlier.
- Select 'Viewing Mail' from the left scroll bar. Uncheck the box that says Allow executables in HTML content.
- There are many more Eudora settings you can set to your personal preferences, such as the way messages are displayed. Once you've made your selections click OK and you are now ready to send and receive your email!
