Checking Email in Macintosh Mail
What is it?
Macintosh OS X comes with a built-in email program simply called Mail. Actually the first time you connect your Macintosh to the network a wizard pops up to set up Mail. If you filled it out, your Mail is already set up!
How do I do it?
- If you have a picture like this:
in the dock at the bottom of your screen, it's Mac Mail, double click on it to open it. Otherwise go to your Hard driveand click on Applications
and double click on Mail.
- In the main screen for Mail, click on the icon labeled Accounts. (You can also get to this by clicking 'mail' at the top of your screen and chosing 'preferences'.)
- Click on Add Account. Mail can be set up to check multiple email accounts. You cannot change an exisiting account from POP to IMAP or vice versa. If you were already using Mail to check using POP, you must make a new account if you want to switch to using IMAP.
- Fill in your information as shown below. The Account Description and your full name can be set as you like. The Username is your regular Case network ID (Usually your initials followed by a number). Your email address can be set to be your regular email address, or any registered alias you are using. (See our instructions about email aliases for more details.) Your incoming server should be mail.case.edu, and it's type should be set to IMAP. Your outgoing SMTP server should be set to smtp.cwru.edu.
- At the bottom of the window next to where you entered smtp.case.edu, click on 'options'. In the smtp options, check 'use ssl'. Click okay.
We recommend you also click on the 'advanced' tab in the account preferences window and check 'use ssl' there for your incoming mail as well. This is optional but provides more security for your mail.
- Click OK, you're ready to check mail with OS X Mail!
