Auto-Reply Messages

What is it?

Some Email programs can be set up to automatically reply to incoming mail with a message you set. Most often this is used to set a 'I'm on vacation and won't read your message until such and such a date' message. To use your email program's auto reply feature you have to leave the computer it is on running and checking your mail while you are gone.

So, how do I do this?

Eudora Pro and Eudora 5.1 have Auto-Reply features. You need to first Make Stationary with your reply message such as 'I will be away from the office and will not read your message until' or 'Your message has been received and is important to us'. Then create a filter to make Eudora reply to any incoming message and make sure that Eudora is set to automatically check your mail. If it isn't checking for new mail, it won't have anything to reply to!

Common Problems

  • I set it up, but no one's getting my reply messages!
Usually this will happen if your email program is not actively checking your email. If it doesn't check your email, it doesn't get the messages to reply to them! In Eudora go to Tools --> Options or Settings for Macintosh users, and select 'Checking mail'. Enter a number between 10 and 90 in the box that says 'Check for mail every __ minutes'. Now Eudora will automatically check your mail and send replies.
  • The auto-reply worked great... but now how do I turn it off?
Usually it is a simple matter of deleting the filter you made. In Eudora go to Tools --> filters and delete your auto-reply filter.
