Making a Spam Control Filter in Microsoft Outlook (POP users)

If you have enabled Spam Control for your Case email account, you will need to make a Junk folder and filter in your email program.
Note: Only use these instructions if you are using POP mail, if you are using IMAP follow the mail.case.edu instructions. A folder will automatically be created in Outlook after setting it up on mail.case.edu. An explaination of POP and IMAP.

Microsoft Outlook 2003 See below for Outlook 2000. Please note that there are no instructions, currently, for Outlook Express.

Microsoft Outlook 2003 contains a highly effective junk filter that is enabled and set to 'low' by default. All filtered spam will go to the 'Junk E-mail' folder where you can choose to save or delete your messages. There are two settings for the junk filter: low and high. The 'high' setting is more effective in eliminating junk emails but runs the chance of filtering out some legitimate email.

To change the Outlook 2003 junk filter settings:

  1. Click on Tools -> Options -> Junk E-mail
  2. Select your choice of the settings listed, High or Low.
  3. Click OK to accept the change and OK again to exit the Options menu. Your filter is configured!
  4. Go to the Spam Control web page. You will need to log in with your Case Network User ID and password. Click on 'Junk Mail Filter' and under 'Junk-mail options' select to enable junk-mail filtering (by default this will be set to disabled). Click OK.

    If you have trouble logging on to the page, try another web browser.
  5. If you like, adjust your personal Accept and Reject lists.
    Note: Accept and Reject Lists have no effect if Spam Control is disabled. You are now using the Spam Control system to filter junk mail!
