Setting up an account with the Aurora Project
Any academic, administrative, or student group at the University can request space on the campus web server.
- Your group should choose one or two people who will be the maintainers of the website.
- Fill out an Aurora Project Inclusion Request form. You will need to print off the form and fill it out with a pen. There is no electronic method to submit this form. Note: The form must be signed by an authorized, full-time Case faculty or staff member who is responsible for the group.
- Once the form is filled out, you can mail it to:
Aurora Web Services
You may also fax the form to (216) 368-5592. If you fax your submission, Case ITS requests that you also mail the submission for recordkeeping purposes.
533 Crawford Hall
Case Western Reserve University
10900 Euclid Avenue
Cleveland, OH 44106-7052 - Pending approval, you will receive an e-mail with your username and password for Aurora, as well as the chosen URL. URLs cannot be changed once they are assigned.
- Before you start building, review the Case Acceptable Use Policy.
Uploading files for the first time
Because Aurora uses FTP, you must upload files using FTP. The Internet Explorer web browser can also be used as a File Transfer Program with no set up necessary! Easy to use, it is quite popular, although it does have the disturbing habit of remembering passwords making it less secure than other FTP programs.
For websites where security is a special concern, e.g. you need secure transactions, download and use a separate FTP client. WS_FTP is popular for Windows, and Fetch is popular for Macs.
- Open Internet Explorer. Double-click on the desktop icon OR click Start, select All Programs, and click Internet Explorer.
- Click in the Address Bar. Type ftp://username:password@ftpwww.case.edu/school/dept. Note: You must use the username and password assigned to you when the account was created on Aurora. The username and password will NOT be the same as your Case User ID and password. Also, be sure to type the correct path, substituting school and dept with the appropriate information.
- Click Login. You should see a folder into which you can transfer files.
- On your computer, right-click the file you would like to transfer and click Copy. Within the FTP window, right-click and select Paste. The files should be transferred.
- When you are finished, close the browser window to terminate the FTP connection.
Editing Current Content
Using the same FTP procedure outlined above, you can move files offline, change them, and then upload the changed files.
As long as you do not change the name of the file, your links should remain intact.
- Follow the first four steps in Uploading files for the first time
- Drag the file you want to change out of the FTP folder and onto the desktop for easy access.
- Make the necessary changes in the editor of your choice and save the file.
- Drag the file back to the FTP folder. Close the browser window to terminate the connection. Note: If you would like to save versions of your web, copy the current content into a new page of your editor and save the file with the same name, but with the date appended. Close the file. Then make changes to original file and save it as you normally would. Drag the original back to the FTP.
Turning over account maintenance
If the registered maintainer of a website has changed, file that change with the Aurora Project. The password will be changed on the account to prevent unauthorized access.
- Fill out another Aurora Project Inclusion Request form.
- Once the form is filled out, mail it to:
Aurora Web Services
You may also fax the form to (216) 368-5592. If you fax your submission, Case ITS requests that you also mail the submission for recordkeeping purposes.
