Symantec Won't Live Update

Why won't Symantec AntiVirus Live Update?

One reason for Norton failing to Live Update is if it cannot reach the Live Update Server.

How to reset LiveUpdate to use the default Symantec LiveUpdate server

Sometimes Norton AntiVirus (Now called Symantec Antivirus Client) will give an error that it couldn't retrieve the catalog file, or says your virus definitions are out of date as of January 10th, no matter how often you click the 'Live Update' button. How to fix it? Fortunately, it is not difficult.
  1. Uninstall your current version of LiveUpdate, usually you can do this by going to Start, choosing Settings, then Control Panels and double clicking on 'Add or Remove Programs'.
  2. Search your computer for other LiveUpdate folders and delete them. We recommend restarting your computer before continuing. If you have trouble finding these files, make sure you have selected under 'folder options' to 'show hidden files or folders'. The location of the file varies according to system:
    • Windows 95/98 - C:\Windows\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate
    • Windows NT 4 - C:\WinNT\\Profiles\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate
    • Windows 2000 - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate
  3. Download the new version of LiveUpdate from http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/files/lu/lu.html and install it. If it does not install automatically, try double clicking on the LUSETUP.EXE file which you downloaded.
