Office XP for Macintosh

Do I need Office?

An important question to ask yourself. Microsoft Office includes a lot of useful programs such as Word, Excel and Powerpoint. If you need one of these programs and do not already have it on your computer by all means, get Office XP! If you already have the programs that you need, you may want to keep the version you have, especially if you have an older computer or one without a lot of memory.

How do I do this?

  1. On the Software Center webpage, click on the Download icon next to Microsoft Office XP Professional for Macintosh. (If you have OS X make sure you click the OS X download, it is the second arrow) download icon Your Download Manager will probably pop up. Note the example pictured is an on-campus download. Office is big, if you are off campus using VPN it will take considerably longer than two minutes.

  2. Once Office has finished downloading stuffit expander should automatically run and then the drive mounting utility. You may now have two or three things on your desktop. In OS X they look like this:

In OS 9, they look like this:

  3. If you have OS X, double click on the thing that looks like a disk drive called CWRU MSOffice X. (If you have OS 9, skip this step)

  5. Click on Microsoft Office and drag it into the Applications folder. There will be a copying files message. Once it is done you can delete the three Microsoft Office things on your desktop. Yes, you could just leave office on your desktop, but this is tidier.
  6. You're done! Simply double click on any of the Microsoft Office programs to open them. The first time you open any of them the Microsoft Office Setup Assistant will open. Enter your name and accept the End User License Agreement. Make sure to write down the product ID!
  7. Check for Critical Updates from Microsoft. There is a link to the critical updates from the Software Center webpage (Click the asterisks * next to Office XP Download).
