What is a hostname?
When you register your network card (synonymous to registering your computer), you will be asked to specify a hostname. If you are using Windows, or Windows file-sharing on a Macintosh or Linux/Unix system, your hostname is the name that will identify your computer to others. Also if you have a web page on your computer, the hostname is the address of your webpage. For example if your computer's hostname was www, your webpage would be www.case.edu. (Obviously, that name is already taken!)
The hostname should be set to match the name of your computer. You may choose any name that has not already been taken on the network. Whoever registers a name first "owns" that name. So if someone registers the name Highlander for their computer, you cannot set that to be your computer's name. There can be only one highlander.case.edu.
Hostname Rules
Your hostname cannot have either underscores (under_score) or apostrophes ('), which means that your computer name cannot have them, either. To avoid connectivity problems, you need to make both names EXACTLY the same. You can change your computer's name or change your hostname, if necessary.
