Why is it necessary to register my computer for the network?
Network registration verifies your computer as a member of the Case network.
1. If we did not require computers to be registered, anyone could walk onto our campus and connect. While this might sound good and humanitarian of us, it could compromise security, slow the network down with increased traffic, and allow all sorts of unwanted activities.
2. If your computer has a problem, Technical Infrastructure Services (Network Services) will be able to know who to contact based on the computer's registration. For example, if your computer becomes infected with a virus, Network Security can look up who the computer belongs to and call you to tell you your computer is infected.
