Your MAC Address

What is it?

Your Media Acess Code (MAC) Address (also called Physical Address, Ethernet Address, Hardware Address or Adaptor Address) is the unique 12-digit name of your network interface card. This is the number you need to register with ITS before you can connect. Usually the first six digits indicate the manufacturer of the network interface card.

How do I find it?

  • Windows 95, 98 or ME:
Go to 'Start' and choose 'Run'. Type in winipcfg this is short for Windows Internet Protocol Configuration. A window should pop up that includes your MAC Address listed as Adaptor Address.
  • Windows NT, 2000 or XP:
Go to 'Start' and choose 'Run'. Type in cmd or command. A terminal window (or Command Prompt) will pop up. At the prompt type ipconfig -all. Some versions of Windows 2000 and XP use a / instead of a -. A bunch of information will scroll past including the Physical Address.
  • Mac OS 7.5 to 9:
Click on the Apple, go to 'control panels' and choose the one called 'TCP/IP' (note: the control panels should be alphabetical). Make sure that Connect using: is set to Built-In Ethernet and not AppleTalk or PPP. Click on the 'info' button. If you do not have an info button, click on 'edit' at the top of your screen and change 'user mode' to advanced. The MAC Address is listed as Hardware Address.
  • Mac OS X
Open up System Preferences (either under the Apple menu or by double clicking the icon in the dock). Double click on 'Network'. The Ethernet Address is listed at the bottom of the control panel.
