Your Computer's Name - Windows NT

  • Right click on Network Neighborhood and choose properties.
Use the right button on your mouse, not the one you normally use. A pop up menu will appear, 'properties' is the bottom choice. Or you can go to 'start' and choose 'settings' then 'Control Panel' and double click on 'Network'.
  • Click on 'Identification' tab if there is a tab, or find the Identification box.
  • Click on 'Change' to change the computer name.
This is also where you can select your computer's Workgroup. Most people set their workgroup to be their building or office. If you type in the name of a workgroup that does not already exist, congratulations, you've just created a new workgroup! Your Workgroup is the group of computers you will see first if you open up Network Neighborhood.
  • Click 'OK' and restart the computer.
  • You're done! Now, if you have not already change your registered Hostname to match!
Note: If you are a member of a Domain or a Domain Controller, check with your Domain Administrator before changing your computer's name. FAQ on domains
