Finding the Computer's Name in XP

  • Right click on My Computer and choose properties.
Use the right button on your mouse, not the one you normally use. A pop up menu will appear, 'properties' is the bottom choice, click on it. In XP, your My Computer is not always on the desktop, check under Start if you do not see it on your desktop.

  • Click on 'Properties' to change the computer name.
This is also where you can select your computer's Workgroup. Most people set their workgroup to be their building or office. If you type in the name of a workgroup that does not already exist, congratulations, you've just created a new workgroup! Your Workgroup is the group of computers you will see first if you open up My Network Places.

  • You're done! Now, if you have not already change your registered Hostname to match!
