Your Computer's Name

Does a name matter?

Well, for a lot of people it doesn't. If you won't be sharing any files, no one will be seeing your computer name on a regular basis, however your computer's name is always there. Much like your Case User ID identifies you, your computer's Hostname identifies it.

Setting the name

The Host Name: What? My computer has two names??

That's right! There's the name your computer thinks is its name, and then there's the name the network knows it by, the Hostname. For most people's purposes the Hostname doesn't really matter, but it is Case policy that your Hostname is set to exactly match the Computer Name you picked. A word of warning: All Hostnames (and computer names for that matter) must be unique. If you pick a name someone else has already registered, you will need to pick a new one, so it is good to have a few good ideas before you start.

How do I set the Hostname?

There are two ways
  1. Set it when you Register your Computer
  2. Go to the Change your Hostname webpage. When your computer was first registered it had a hostname set. You cannot register a computer without setting a hostname. If you didn't pick it, it's set to a generic hostname such as tmp002048080a0b and you'll want to change it to match the computer name you've chosen.
Note: The Hostname cannot be longer than 15 characters and also cannot contain spaces or apostrophe's.
