Antivirus programs
The most common anti-virus programs (also called disinfectants) include:
- Symantec's Norton AntiVirus
- McAfee VirusScan
- F-secure (formerly F-Prot)
These are available at the CASE Bookstore as well as computer stores like CompUSA or Microcenter. Free, limited-time evaluation copies of some of the programs are available on the WWW. However, these only work for a limited period of time before they expire and become ineffective. The university does provide, free of charge to all current students, staff and faculty, a complete version of Symantec's Norton Antivirus, through the university's SoftwareCenter. Also, keep in mind that because new viruses are always being developed or old viruses mutate into new versions of themselves, the virus profile that any anti-virus program uses to catch the viruses, will end up out-of-date. Most programs have virus update files that you can download from the WWW or subscribe to. It's always wise to keep your virus file updated and make sure that you are protecting your computer from the most current viruses.
